Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause numbness, tingling, discomfort, weakness, and difficulty using the hand. Symptoms may interfere with typing, gripping, driving, sleeping, working, exercising, and everyday activities.
At Spine Align Chiropractic & Wellness in Huntsville, AL, we evaluate your symptoms and functional limitations to help determine what may be contributing to your hand and wrist symptoms and whether conservative care may be appropriate.
What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist.
Common symptoms may include:
- Numbness or tingling in the hand or fingers
- Burning or discomfort in the hand or wrist
- Symptoms that are worse at night
- Difficulty gripping or holding objects
- Hand weakness or clumsiness
- Symptoms aggravated by repetitive hand or wrist activities
Not all hand numbness or tingling is caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. Similar symptoms can sometimes originate from other areas, including the neck, shoulder, elbow, or forearm, making an appropriate evaluation important.
Our Approach to Carpal Tunnel Symptoms
Treatment is personalized based on your history, examination findings, symptoms, and functional limitations.
Depending on your individual needs and the suspected source of your symptoms, conservative care may include:
Chiropractic Care
When appropriate, chiropractic care may be used to address mobility restrictions involving the wrist, elbow, upper extremity, neck, or upper back that may be contributing to movement or functional limitations.
Therapeutic Exercise
Individualized exercises may be used to improve wrist and upper-extremity mobility, strength, stability, and function.
Physiotherapy
Supportive therapies may be incorporated when appropriate to address muscle tension, discomfort, and soft-tissue involvement in the wrist, forearm, or surrounding areas.
Shockwave Therapy
When appropriate, shockwave therapy may be used for certain muscle, tendon, or soft-tissue problems occurring alongside hand or wrist symptoms. Treatment is directed toward appropriate musculoskeletal tissues rather than the median nerve itself.
Treatment Focused on Hand Function
Carpal tunnel symptoms can be frustrating because they interfere with how you use your hands. Our approach considers both your symptoms and the activities you're having difficulty performing.
Treatment may focus on helping you:
- Grip and hold objects more comfortably
- Improve wrist and hand mobility
- Perform computer and desk work more comfortably
- Improve strength and upper-extremity function
- Perform work and household activities with fewer limitations
- Return to exercise and recreational activities
Is It Carpal Tunnel or Could the Symptoms Be Coming From Somewhere Else?
Numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in the hand does not automatically mean you have carpal tunnel syndrome.
Nerves traveling into the hand originate in the neck and pass through several areas of the upper extremity. Symptoms may sometimes be related to the cervical spine or another location rather than—or in addition to—the wrist.
An examination can help determine whether your symptoms are consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome or whether another source should be considered.
When Should Hand or Wrist Symptoms Be Evaluated?
Consider an evaluation if numbness, tingling, pain, weakness, or loss of hand function persists, repeatedly returns, wakes you at night, or interferes with work and normal activities.
Progressive weakness, significant loss of sensation, muscle wasting, severe symptoms following an injury, or other concerning neurological findings may require additional medical evaluation or referral.
